Dalziel contacts BP Compromise needed over new Edgeware premises „„ By Gabrielle Stuart MAYOR LIANNE Dalziel has waded into the battle between the expanded BP Edgeware and its neighbours. She has phoned BP executives in Auckland asking them to replace the trees they removed along the boundary with neighbours, which would hide the 20m wall of the expanded shop. The neighbours spent more than six months trying Lianne Dalziel to fight the expansion of the BP, but the plan was approved at a resource consent hearing heard by commissioner David Mountfort. In his decision, he said the effect on neighbours would be “less than minor . . . quite benign.�

Residents are now furious at Mr Mountfort’s belief the effect would be minor. A hearing was required as the service station expansion breached resource consent rules by expanding into an area zoned residential. The city council had supported the expansion of the service station. BP has built its new shop along the fence of Cornwall St resident Kazu Kano, where there was once a row of established trees. His view now is of a 20m long, almost 5m high white wall just
behind the boundary fence, which reflects glare into his home. Mr Kano asked BP to repaint the wall to reduce the glare, and to replace the plants along the boundary. But BP refused. Local city councillor Pauline Cotter and city council staff said last month they could do nothing about it. But after articles were published in the Nor’West News and The Star, Ms Dalziel has stepped in. She asked them to reconsider the landscaping along the
boundary, although she has not asked them to repaint the wall. Ms Dalziel said yesterday BP would be working towards a compromise with the neighbours over the issue. Mr Kano said the fact Ms Dalziel had stepped in was good news for the residents. “It is very good news for us. I much appreciate support from neighbours and Mayor Lianne Dalziel’s involvement,� he said. Nor West News also emailed photos of the new BP to the Mr Mountfort, and asked if he still believed the effects on neigh-
bours were “less than minor . . . quite benignâ€?. He replied: “I will never comment to the media on a decision I’ve issued.â€? News Trust eyes bigger premises By Bridget Rutherford A TRUST that helps get people into jobs, provides a meeting space and supports the Shirley community could get a new home. Shirley Community Trust has been operating out of a oneroom building in MacFarlane Park next to the playcentre for 17 years. But with 230 volunteers running more than 20 programmes and events and a cafe, the trust needs an extra facility. It and the Papanui-Innes Community Board are looking into whether they could use the portable facility currently housing the St Albans Community Centre once the new one is Graeme rebuilt next year. The Shirley Mitchell Community Trust runs a community cafe on Friday mornings during school terms, and houses foot-care clinics, after school programmes, numeracy and literary courses, a fruit and vege co-op and provides a meeting space.

a cafe. Shirley Community Trust spokesman Graeme Mitchell said they were “totally
stretched.” “That shoebox is all we have to run over 20 programmes and events.” He said they used to utilise community halls and churches in the area, however, they were damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. “There are so many things we can’t offer yet because we just don’t have the space,” he said. “It would be a sign to say that people care about Shirley.” City councillor Pauline Cotter said Lions donated the portable building to Christchurch following the February 2011 earthquake. She said the community board and city council staff were seeing whether the association would like to gift it to the city council, so it could be used elsewhere. “The area in Shirley is an area of high needs.” The portable building has a large meeting room, two offices, a kitchen and toilets.

Land sought for new centre By Bridget Rutherford DISCUSSIONS ARE underway on whether a piece of land next to St Albans Community Centre could be bought to provide green space for the new centre once it has been rebuilt. City councillor Mike Davidson said the city council had spoken with the owners of the property at 130 Caledonian Rd to see whether it could buy the section. However, he said he could not release any details because it was “commercially sensitive.” “It’s not council-owned and we need to see if it’s going to be able to be purchased.” The property is next door to the Caledonian Rd side of the community centre site. Plans to rebuild the centre have been approved, with construction to begin in the first half of next year. Mr Davidson said the plans took up most of the current site, and once car parking was included, there would be little room for green space. “The board believes that piece of land would be quite beneficial for the community centre.”

History of Papanui

Murray Williams explains the background behind his new book Timber Town to City Suburb – An Illustrated History of Papanui, which he co-wrote with Christine Grant and David O’Malley This book is the first to consider the general history of Papanui. It references Maori use of the Papanui bush as a source of food (native birds) and then explores the area’s very earliest days of European settlement as a timber workers’ town. Later development as a centre for small farming and horticulture is followed in the context of its transition over the decades to the thriving Christchurch suburb we know today. Early communication between Christchurch and Papanui was difficult and expensive, as the only access was the swampy track termed Papanui Rd. Later in the 19th century, the development of railway and tram links tightened the bonds between the city and the village that developed around the conjunction of the North, Papanui and Harewood Rds. The history of Papanui architecture recalls the now

vanished public buildings, such as the Papanui Memorial Hall and the Waimairi Council Chambers, as well as highlighting the development of domestic design, especially the bay villas of the early 20th century and the arrival of the famous Californian and European bungalows. Luckily, there is still some evidence of the latter styles, although the character of Papanui is changing rapidly and this process is documented. Formal education in Papanui is reviewed starting with the denominational schools of the 1850s and 1860s and then the effect of central Government involvement and the change in the nature of school buildings over a century and a half are also considered. Papanui’s first church, St Paul’s Anglican (and its graveyard), has since been complemented by a wide range of alternative denominational options. This development is explained along with an analysis of the evolution of the varying styles of church design that have added to the character of the area. Papanui is well-served with a range of parks and other recreational areas and the development of these is explained and

It comes as there is an increase of people using the reserves due to the growing population in the north of the city. The city council is asking for ideas on what people would like to see in those reserves. It says it needed to develop a master plan to consider “how this reserve land is to be used now and in the future.” The master plan would consider whether recreational activities were in the best areas, and if any layout changes needed to be made.

Fundraiser earns $130,000 for Starship’s STARSHIP’S national air ambulance service has been given over $130,000 after a fundraiser tea party held at Mona Vale. It was the second year the Christchurch Diamonds and Stars Tea Party has taken place, an event organised by the Friends of Starship. A marquee was set up on the Iris Lawn and 240 guests attended on November 27. Silent and live auctions were held, with items such as Bruce Springsteen tickets, a return trip
to Honolulu for two plus five nights of accommodation, and swimming lessons up for grabs. Phil McGoldrick was the auctioneer, while Jenny Burtt Florist owner Dale Brown donated the orchid centrepieces on the tables that were later auctioned off. The air ambulance service flies medical experts to children in life-threatening emergencies around the country, and they treat the children in the aircraft on the way to Starship. Six-year-old Connor was hit by a car in May and was flown in the air ambulance to Starship with a broken pelvis, a brain bleed and the ligaments holding his head onto his back bone were torn. He was in a coma for 10 days and spent the next two weeks at Starship. The tea party was hosted by Friends of Starship co-chairwomen Charlotte Smulders and Gina Satterthwaite, while radio and television personality Mike Puru was the MC. Mrs Smulders said the money raised was crucial for the service. “It’s an essential service to fly our sick and injured children from the South Island, receiving critical and world class care as they fly. The care on board can make the difference between life and death.” Last year, 432 children were admitted to Starship from the South Island – more than one each day. The Starship Foundation raises $1.5 million each year to fund the air ambulance. Moet & Chandon provided the champagne for the tea party, while CoLab, Clive Barrington Construction, Continental and EY were the event sponsors.

News Get ready for Chch’s iconic fun run THOUSANDS OF Cantabrians from all walks of life are starting their preparations for The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero on Sunday, March 19. Entries are now open for the 43rd running of the event. In the past, the 14km event (starting at Centennial Park) has been seen as for runners only, but with the introduction of the very popular Sport Canterbury 6km event (starting at Hansen Park), this fun run is really about movement, whether it be running, jogging or walking. Both events finish at Ferrymead playing fields, which will be full of family entertainment and prizes. The fun run is also free to participants under 10-years-old. Next year’s The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero is proudly supporting Aviva family services. Looking to inspire others to put

The family began its journey to a healthy lifestyle through a Facebook page Hungry4Hauora. It highlights the family’s journey of ups and downs on the way to a healthy lifestyle. Normally very camera shy, Rudolph and wife Telena want to inspire others, especially the Maori and Pacific community. After just two months of regular exercise and nutritious eating, Mr Diaz says he has already noticed a difference in his energy levels and skin health.
Working as a health and well-being adviser at He Waka Tapu, Mr Diaz is urging others who are looking to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle, to use The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero as a vehicle for change. He Waka Tapu had 600 participants in the 2016 event and is aiming to reach 1000 participants in 2017. The family has already set about getting active, regularly attending training circuits with the Hale Compound Conditioning organisation. “A big part of the fitness group we are in is to set goals throughout the year. City2Surf is the main goal for a lot of people in our group,” Mr Diaz said. Getting fit for the 6km or 14km event will be just the start for the family who are looking to get to their goal weights by next October. Mr Diaz is hoping to get from 140kg, which he weighed two months ago, down to 95kg.

LEGENDARY BUILD UP: Being clean bowled around your legs isn’t the best feeling in the world. However, if it’s at the hands of Richie McCaw (batting above), the blow may be softened somewhat. Christchurch Boys’ High School first XI captain Ben Donkers knows that feeling after being bowled around his legs by McCaw during a match against The Willows Cricket Club. Batting first, CBHS scored 219 before restricting The Willows to 163, winning by 56 runs. CBHS used the game as a build-up to the Secondary School Boys’ First XI Cup finals, which are currently taking place in Lincoln this week. CBHS qualified for the top-six national tournament by defeating St Andrew’s College in the Canterbury regional final last month and are going for their fourth title.
Student athletes finish on podium at national champs THERE WERE a number of success stories for north-west athletes on the weekend at the NZ Secondary Schools Track, Field and Road Race Championships in Auckland. One of the highlights from the national event was a local podium finish in the girls’ 1500m senior final. Ari Graham from St Andrew’s College took out the race in a winning time of 4m 39.17s, with Burnside High School’s Charlotte Blair and St Andrew’s College’s Harriet Bush second and third respectively. St Bede’s College student Nick Moulai shattered a nine-year-old national record when he won the boys’ 3000m senior final in

Tom Gill. He survived touching the penultimate hurdle and a recent shoulder injury to take a narrow and dramatic win in the final of the senior boys’ 110m hurdles final in a time of 14.80s. The girls’ junior high jump featured a Christchurch one-two. Maddie Wilson from St Margaret’s College won the title with a jump of 1.64m, with Anastasia Naylor from Christchurch Girls’ High School finishing in second just three centimetres under.

Ensuring a safe work place Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings.
